NOIRANS (4 per order MAX)

If you are thinking, Hey! this looks like a Black Copper Marans!, you would be sort of right.  Hendrix Genetics has done it again!  Identifying a heritage breed of great value, that has been weakened by inbreeding which reduces their utility, Hendrix went back to the source of the Marans to reconstitute the 'original' bird.  Not wanting to step on show breeder's toes, they have given them a new name - Noirans roughly translates to 'Black Ones'.  It is pronounced Noh-runz.

Now the details!  Like the original Marans, the Noirans is a heavier bird than we are used to - the Marans were meat birds before the French added the chocolate egg genes (which they got from Langshans... but that's another whole story!)  They are officially rated to lay 295 large eggs in their first year of lay, and they are endowed with ALL of those dark eggs genes that are needed to make a truly chocolate coloured egg!  There is relatively little 'fade out' as the laying cycle carries on.  Like most large hens they are calm and gentle.  No roosters will be available.

DARK BRAHMA

SOLD OUT

BARNEVELDER

Barnevelders are a Dutch breed, double-laced but not the same pattern as the Brahmas.  They are excellent layers of dark brown eggs - darker than the usual brown egg but not chocolate - and busy 'working girls' in the hen house.  They reportedly lay 180 eggs per year - I have not been able to verify this information - and the eggs are large.  They have clean legs and tidy single combs, making them well adapted to the Wet Coast and also the Interior of BC.

Columbian Rock

If you are saying, 'Hey! That looks like a Light Sussex!' you would be sort of right.  'Columbian' is ChickenSpeak for this plumage pattern, which the two breeds share.  But to my eye this is a very different hen.  First note the yellow legs, and the Rocks have yellow skin, too (Sussex have white skin and legs).  Then there is the 'brick' body shape that Rocks have, giving them a forward leaning posture and consequently a different gait.  But these are rather subtle differences.  Columbian Rocks are less seasonal in their egg laying than Sussex, and lay a conventional brown egg, size large.  They are rated as 'excellent' layers but I can not find any reliable numbers to give you.

LIGHT SUSSEX

You know you have been wanting to try some of my favourite dual-purpose bird forever, right?  Look at those white lady legs - does anything say British purity better than that?  They are good winter layers, excellent mousers (really!), and the hens that go broody can hatch 20 eggs in a well-made nest, at a fraction of the cost of a Brinsea incubator.  You can Read more here

PRODUCTION REDS

This is a heritage cross between Rhode Island Red and Rhode Island White, which you can see in the varied shades of brown with white or black factoring.  They will give you egg production almost as good as commercial brown egg layers while looking calico old-fashioned.  Read more here.
